If you’ve got ADHD, you already know that traditional advice like “just write it down” or “just focus” isn’t just unhelpful—it’s borderline insulting. Our brains work differently, and that means we need tools, not shame.
Over the years, I’ve collected a handful of ADHD-friendly hacks that actually help me get through the day with less chaos and more clarity. These aren’t cure-alls, but they’re small adjustments that make a big difference.
Ready to make life a little easier? Let’s go.
1. Use Alarms for Everything (Seriously, Everything)
Appointments, laundry, dinner, time to wind down, time to eat—if it matters, set an alarm.Bonus: label your alarms with funny or motivating phrases like “Drink water, you dehydrated sunflower” or “Leave now or be awkwardly late again.”
2. Break Everything Into Micro-Tasks
“Clean the kitchen” is too vague. Break it into “clear counter,” “load dishwasher,” “wipe table.”Each micro-task = dopamine when checked off. Boom.
3. The “Two-Minute Rule”
If it’ll take less than two minutes, do it right now.Text replies, putting shoes away, tossing junk mail—this helps stop the pileup before it starts.
4. Create a “Drop Zone” at the Door
Designate a specific spot for keys, wallet, bag, or anything you constantly lose.Use a basket, bowl, or hooks—whatever keeps it in one place. The fewer decisions, the better.
5. Use a Visual Schedule or Whiteboard
Your brain loves visual cues. A dry-erase board with your daily must-dos = instant clarity.Even better? Color-code it. Use images or icons if that helps you track tasks.
6. Body Double When You’re Stuck
Working alongside someone else (in person or virtually) can work wonders.Need to clean? Call a friend while you do it. Need to write? Use a “study with me” YouTube video. Shared energy = productivity magic.
7. Give Tasks a “Parking Spot”
Create a go-to place for recurring mental clutter—random ideas, to-dos, or worries.Notebook, phone app, voice memo—whatever’s fastest. That way, your brain doesn’t have to juggle everything.
8. Make It Fun or Weird (That’s Allowed)
Fold laundry while watching your favorite show. Race the clock to clean the kitchen.Use colorful pens, stickers, playlists—whatever turns a boring task into something playful. ADHD thrives on novelty.
9. Automate What You Can
Autopay your bills. Subscribe to groceries or household items. Use calendar reminders.Fewer decisions = less stress and more brainpower for the stuff that really matters.
10. Practice Forgiveness. Daily.
Some days the dishes stay dirty. The task list stays unchecked. Your brain felt like soup. You didn’t fail. You lived a day with a complex brain and did the best you could.Reset tomorrow. You’re human—and that’s enough.
💡 Final Thoughts
Living with ADHD isn’t about “fixing” yourself. It’s about learning what supports your brain, your rhythm, your reality. These hacks aren’t rules—they’re tools. Take what helps, toss what doesn’t, and keep building a life that works for you.
